History of Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA)

The suggestion to organize Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) was made by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport mid 1984. At the early stage, the event was suggested to be held on 15 August to 2 September 1985 with 6 sports as a start which was athletics, tennis, volleyball, cycling, ping pong and sepak takraw.
This brought about an influx of suggestions and ways to make this event more popular and challenging. Among them was to add more sports and to involve the private sector in the effort to generate a source of funds.
On 5 February 1985, the board of directors agreed to organize this event early 1986. “Malaysia Incorporated” was used as the concept for the event and the amateur sports rules being used.
The high-powered committee and the organizing committee was established and on 6th July 1985. The first meeting was held and 21 sports were suggested but finally only 16 sports were listed. Below are a list of the 1st High-Powered Committee and the list of the 16 sports.
