Hammam plays down FIFA ambition

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) chief Mohamed Hammam admitted yesterday he was ambitious but played down suggestions he could run for FIFA president.
The Qatari’s reputation as a moderniser has seen him mentioned as a potential successor to the aging Sepp Blatter, 72, who has run FIFA since 1998 and whose term runs out in 2011.
Hammam, a FIFA executive member since 1996, said it was too early to speculate what might happen in the future.
“It’s a premature idea at the monent,” he said.
“For the time being I should limit my thinking and my ambition to the development of football in Asia.
“When the post is vacant, then people can talk about this,” he said.
Hammam, 60, recently said he would be in favour of a worldwide term limit that curtails each presidential spell after a set number of years to make sure the top jobs are filled by leaders with fresh ideas. — AFP
